Every Hornady Outfitter round is topped with the company's GMX bullet design, made from a solid copper alloy. This design, while being California-compliant, also ensures that hunters see uniform expansion, as well as significant penetration and weight-retention. Hornady touts a weight-retention of 95 percent or greater.
 
To protect the powder in each Hornady Outfitter cartridge and guard against corrosion, the cases are all nickel-plated, and the case mouths and primer pockets are coated with a waterproof seal.
